This now brings me to my final point.
Warning: You’ve Met One Person with Dementia! You
Need to Meet Us All!
As stated by Prof Tom Kitwood in 1997 “If you’ve met one person with
Dementia, then you’ve only met one person with Dementia.” This is as true
today as it was then, perhaps more so. Remember, what I detail here is my
experience, and is applicable to me. Don’t assume what works for one will
work for others, even with the same or similar diagnosis.
We are all unique individuals, whether we have a Dementia or not. So please
treat us a such and remember us for who we are, not our disease.
It you wish to work with people with a Dementia diagnosis, you must be
flexible and open to learn new things and to see the world in differing
perspectives.
